I love a lot of things about Japan. One of my favorite things is having a "Kotatsu" in our living room. It is a low table (kind of like a square American coffee table) with a small heater attached to the underside of the table. In the winter time we put a blanket in between the top 2 layers of the table (the top piece of wood just sits on the blanket); this keeps the heat in under the table. A traditional Japanese floor chair fits perfectly with a Kotatsu, but even sitting on our sofa, your toes are toasty warm.

We also have a heated pad under the small rug in our living room. Since we don't have central heating in our apartment, this can heat up a small room and warms you where you are often cold, on the floor. We have found our apartment to be much warmer than the house we used to rent. It helps having cement walls and neighbors on each side of us, as well as a lot less windows. So, come on over and sip some tea (it doesn't have to be green). And we'll give you the warm spot, on the floor.
