I am often overwhelmed by the masses in Tokyo while riding the trains. It's easy to look them as just a crowd of people, but each smartly dressed, bowed, dark head I pass is a lost soul that will probably never have the chance to hear. It's easier to be numb and blind, otherwise it hurts too much to care.
I feel the same as our son who said when we were talking about this, "That's just too sad".
Sigh. It really is.
