I went not knowing a soul, and came home with kindred-spirit friends. Somehow, when missionaries get together that happens. Our shared common experiences of life and ministry overseas bonds us together. It is great to have others understand the similar struggles we face and have a safe place to let down and share our hearts.
These conferences cost the missionary only a $90 registration fee and travel costs. The rest of the expenses are covered by generous donors. About 20 volunteer staff came along to give pedicures, haircuts, do eyebrows, give massages, and do counseling. ( I even got to meet 1 on 1 with a physical trainer for personal excercise workout advise.) We were also treated to many small gifts and even new clothes while staying at a beautiful hotel with a pool and catered meals. I was so thankful for this God given get-away!
Check out WOTH's website. They are a non-profit organization that seeks to encourage missionary women through conferences in the US and on the field, as well as through helpful articles about missionary life in their online magazine.
