I am not one of your typical missionaries. You know, the ones who love international food and can't wait to try the local cuisine when traveling. It's just not me. I didn't become a global worker because of my intrigue with ethnic foods. It was pure obedience to what it seemed God wanted me to do along with the conviction of the lack of Christian workers overseas. So in stepping out to Asia, rather than gleeful delight at sushi and salmon, it was a reluctant attitude of "Where He leads me I will follow, what He feeds me I will swallow".
But over the years my taste buds have matured a little. Granted, I still don't like raw fish or tofu but I have really made the effort to try things out and give it my best shot. Especially when I travel.
And so it was on this latest trip to Northern Thailand. The rest of the missionaries around me couldn't wait to try out the open markets and street food. And the spicier the better!! I tagged along asking what on the table had the least kick. I happily tried each food passed around and pleasantly found some more bland dishes quite tasty.
I also found something that I loved! Tea.
Trying out tea in Asian countries has been a delight. And Thailand did not disappoint. "Thai Tea" is earthy with an intriguing orange color, usually served cold and with lots of milky, sugary goodness. There is nothing like it on a hot, humid afternoon. Especially if you can find a quaint outdoor cafe with lots of luscious green and flowers surrounding you. But I have to admit that buying it from the street stand is even cheaper and those sips cool you off as you walk back through the dusty, colorful streets.
So, I may not be the "queen of cuisine" snapping pictures of the intriguing things I am eating, but I have found pleasant treats to sip that make each trip enjoyable. And for that I am very thankful.
