Instant Homemade Oatmeal

Since we can't by flavored, instant oatmeal here we have discovered the next best thing...
Overnight Crock pot Oatmeal.

I found a recipe here that I adjusted to fit the mini-sized crock pot I brought back from the US in my suitcase last summer. Also most of the recipes I found on line ask for steal cut oats, which we can't get.  This recipe worked with plain old fashioned oats.  It makes 4 big bowl-fulls.  My kids love fast and easy...and I love feeding my family whole grains.  And, we all love waking up to a hot, steamy ready-made breakfast on a cold winter morning.

Overnight Apples and Cinnamon Crock pot Oatmeal

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 apple (cut in small bit sized pieces)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/6 cup brown sugar packed
  • 3 cups of cold water
  • 1 1/2 cups of old fashioned oats
Mix apple chucks with sugar and cinnamon.  Put into lightly greased small crock pot.  Mix water, salt and oats. Pour on top of apples.  Don't mix.  Cook on low 8-10 hours overnight.  Mix well before serving.  Top with milk and chopped walnuts as desired.
