Hanging up clothes on Christmas Day?

"If I was in the States," I thought to myself, "I would never bother with laundry on a holiday."

But in Japan, it's a different story.
Much of my day revolves around laundry. Often my first thought in the morning is, "Oh, it's sunny, quick get the washing machine started so the clothes can dry while the sun is still out." I often check the weather and base my household chores on the weatherman's predictions, wondering how much laundry will be able to dry that day.

I know exactly how long a load takes in the washer, 32 minutes. I often set my alarm clock based on how many anticipated loads I will have the next morning. Sometimes I do some wash the night before, like jeans that take longer to dry. I hang them inside to start to dry, then move them outside once the sun is up. But if I am too late in the afternoon to get my clothes hung outside, then I have to move them back inside to finish up. It's amazing how many times I can move that silly sock or t-shirt around just to get it dry enough to put it away in a dresser drawer.
I enjoy the fresh air and sunshine hanging laundry gives me though, especially after hours spent hunched over my computer doing e-mail or writing a prayer letter. Sometimes it's the only time I see the granny next door. We smile and greet each other from our 2nd floor verandas. I especially like midnight laundry under the brilliant moonlight or in the late afternoon when the sun is setting and the sky is all aglow and breathtakingly beautiful; An extra little blessing in my busy, city-life day.
